জানুন মে দিবসের সংগ্রামী ইতিহাসের খুঁটিনাটি:
International Labour Day 2021 : মহান মে দিবস আদতে আন্তর্জাতিক শ্রমিক দিবস হিসাবে পরিচিত। ভারত সহ বিশ্বের বিভিন্ন দেশে আজ সরকারি ছুটির দিন। শ্রমজীবী মানুষের কাছে আজ এই দিনটির আলাদা করে কোনও গুরুত্ব উপলব্ধি করা না গেলেও আজ থেকে ১৩২ বছর আগে এক সংগ্রামের মধ্য দিয়ে শ্রমিকরা অধিকার আদায় করে নিয়েছিলেন।
১৮৮৬ সালে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে শ্রমিকরা দৈনিক আট ঘণ্টা কাজের দাবিতে শিল্পাঞ্চল এলাকায় ধর্মঘট করেন। আট ঘণ্টার বেশি কাজ করানোর প্রতিবাদ করেন। এছাড়া আরও নানা দাবি ছিল।
আন্দোলের সূত্রপাত শিকাগোর হে মার্কেটের সামনে সেদিন বিশাল শ্রমিক জমায়েত হয়। বিক্ষোভে দেখালে গুলি চালায় পুলিশ। যার ফলে ১১-১২ জনের মৃত্যু হয়। এর থেকেই সারা বিশ্বে বিক্ষোভ ছড়িয়ে পড়ে। বিশ্বের শ্রমজীবী মানুষ এক সুরে প্রতিবাদ জানান।
সরকার দাবি মেনে নেয় অবশেষে ১৯০৪ সালে অ্যামস্টারড্যামে দৈনিক আটঘন্টা কাজের সময় নির্ধারণের দাবি আদায়ের জন্য এবং শান্তি প্রতিষ্ঠার জন্য মিছিল ও শোভাযাত্রা করে। বিশ্বজুড়ে শ্রমজীবী মানুষ পয়লা মে কাজ না করার সিদ্ধান্ত নেয়। শ্রমজীবী মানুষের চাপে পড়ে সরকার আট ঘণ্টা কাজের দাবি মানতে শেষ অবধি বাধ্য হয়। পরে আত্মত্যাগী শ্রমিকদের স্মরণে মে মাসের প্রথম দিনটি শ্রমজীবী দিবস হিসাবে পালন শুরু হয়।
নানা দেশে মে দিবস পালন পূর্বতন সোভিয়েত ইউনিয়ন, চিন, কিউবা-সহ বিশ্বের অনেক দেশেই মে দিবস একটি আলাদা তাৎপর্যপূর্ণ দিন। এই দেশগুলিতে পয়লা মে সামরিক কুচকাওয়াজের আয়োজনও করা হয়। ভারতে দুই একটি এমার্জেন্সি ক্ষেত্র ছাড়া সমস্ত শ্রমজীবী সেক্টর, অফিস মে দিবসে বন্ধ থাকে। আমেরিকা ও কানাডাতে অবশ্য সেপ্টেম্বর মাসে শ্রমদিবস পালিত হয়।
International Labour Day 2021: May Day is known as International Workers’ Day. Today is a public holiday in many countries of the world including India. Although the importance of this day could not be realized by the working people today, the workers realized their rights through a struggle 132 years ago.
In the 18th century, workers in the United States went on strike in industrial areas demanding eight hours a day. Protested for more than eight hours. There were also other demands.
The beginning of the movement was a huge gathering of workers in front of the Chicago O Market that day. Police fired at the protest. As a result, 11-12 people died. Protests spread all over the world from this. The working people of the world protested in unison.
The government accepted the demand and finally in 1904 marched and marched in Amsterdam to demand eight hours of daily work and to establish peace. Working people around the world decide not to work on May 1st.
Under the pressure of the working people, the government was forced to accept the demand of eight hours of work till the end. Later, the first day of May was observed as Labor Day in memory of the selfless workers.
May Day is celebrated in many countries around the world, including the former Soviet Union, China, and Cuba. Military parades are also held in these countries on May 1st. In India, all working sectors, except for one emergency area, are closed on May Day. In the United States and Canada, however, Labor Day is celebrated in September.
