What is DigiYatra?: DigiYatra is a facial recognition-based digital initiative for air travel in India. It aims to streamline the boarding process by eliminating the need for physical documents and long queues. Launched in December 2022, it’s currently operational at Delhi, Varanasi, Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Kolkata, and Mumbai airports.

How Does it Work?

  1. Download the App: The DigiYatra app is available for free on the App Store and Google Play.

  2. Register: Register using your phone number and a one-time password (OTP). Link your Aadhaar credentials through DigiLocker or directly using your Aadhaar number. If you aren’t registered on DigiLocker yet, you’ll need to do that first.

  3. Facial Recognition: Take a clear selfie within the app and validate it with your Aadhaar. This creates a facial recognition profile linked to your identity.

  4. Airport Entry & Security: At participating airports, use the dedicated DigiYatra lanes for a contactless experience. Facial recognition cameras will verify your identity at checkpoints, allowing for smoother passage through security and boarding.

Benefits of DigiYatra

  • Faster and More Convenient: Skip long queues and document checks for a quicker and hassle-free airport experience.
  • Contactless Travel: Reduce physical contact at checkpoints, especially beneficial during a pandemic.
  • Secure: DigiYatra adheres to strict privacy guidelines. Your Personally Identifiable Information (PII) and travel data are not stored on the app.

Additional Points

  • As of April 2, 2024, the DigiYatra app has undergone a significant update. Due to scaling up for new airports and passengers, the app’s underlying infrastructure has changed. This means you cannot retrieve any historical travel data from previous versions.
