The “Where is My Bus” app, a collaborative effort between the Transport Department and a private advertisement agency, aims to streamline bus services and enhance passenger convenience. In its initial phase, bus drivers in key areas like Salt Lake, Garia, Madhyamgram, and Dum Dum will undergo comprehensive training to familiarize themselves with the app’s functionality.

The app operates through a simple yet effective QR code scanning system. Before commencing their routes, drivers will be required to scan a unique QR code through the app. This action will transmit detailed information about the bus, including its location, route, and estimated arrival times, to the state transport department’s IT division.
The IT division will then process and upload this data onto the “Where is My Bus” app, making it accessible to subscribing passengers. This real-time tracking feature will allow commuters to monitor the precise location and arrival times of buses on their respective routes directly from their smartphones. This eliminates the uncertainty and frustration often associated with waiting for public transport.
“This initiative is a major step towards modernizing our public transport system,” stated a senior official from the Transport Department. “By providing real-time information, we aim to make commuting more predictable and efficient for our citizens.”
In addition to the app,
the Transport Department, in collaboration with the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, will install digital display boards at strategic junctions across the city. These boards will display real-time bus arrival information, route details, and estimated timings, further enhancing passenger accessibility to crucial travel data.
The “Where is My Bus” app will encompass all government and private buses, including minibuses, ensuring comprehensive coverage across the state’s public transport network. To facilitate the app’s implementation, the government will provide smartphones to all bus owners for their drivers’ use.
The partnership with the advertisement agency is a key component of this project. The agency will fund the provision of smartphones to bus owners, alleviating the financial burden on the government. In return, the agency will be granted advertising rights on the buses, creating a sustainable model for the app’s maintenance and expansion.
The training of drivers is a crucial aspect of the project’s success. The Transport Department will provide thorough training to ensure that all drivers are proficient in using the app and adhering to the required protocols.
With the launch of the “Where is My Bus” app, the West Bengal government aims to usher in a new era of efficient and transparent public transportation. By leveraging technology and strategic partnerships, the state is taking a significant step towards improving the daily lives of its citizens. The app’s launch in April is eagerly anticipated by commuters across the state, promising a more predictable and convenient travel experience.
