Gold medal award: খেলাধুলা কিংবা প্রতিযোগিতার শীর্ষ স্থান দখলকারীকে পুরস্কৃত করতে দেয়া হয় সোনার মেডেল। এরপর দ্বিতীয় এবং তৃতীয় স্থানকারী সথাক্রমে রুপা, ব্রোঞ্জ কিংবা সিলভারের মেডেল। তবে এ তো গেল খেলার কথা। অনেকে পড়ায় ভালো ফলাফলের জন্য অর্জন করে নেন সোনার মেডেল।
তবে এবার কোনো খেলার বা লেখাপড়ার জন্য নয়। সোনার মেডেল (Gold medal award:)দেয়া হলো স্থলমাইন খুঁজে দেয়ার জন্য। তাও এক ইঁদুর কে। অবাক হলেন নিশ্চয়? হ্যাঁ, ঠিকই শুনেছেন স্থলমাইন খুঁজে বের করে সোনার মেডেল জিতে নিয়েছে গন্ধ শুঁকেই সে মাটির নিচে লুকিয়ে থাকা এই ভয়ানক বিস্ফোরক খুঁজে বের করেছে সে।
মাগাওয়া একটি আফ্রিকান ইঁদুর। কম্বোডিয়ার ভূমিতে স্থলমাইন খুঁজে দেয়ার মতো গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কাজের জন্য তাকে এই সম্মানজনক স্বর্ণপদক দেয়া হয়। নিজের জীবনের ঝুঁকি নিয়ে কম্বোডিয়ার ভূমিতে ভয়ানক স্থলমাইন খুঁজে বের অসংখ্য জীবন বাঁচানো’র অবদানের জন্য মাগাওয়াকে এই সম্মানজনক পদক দিয়েছে ব্রিটেনের দাতা সংস্থা পিডিএসএ। নিজের এই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ক্যারিয়ারে ৩৯টি স্থলমাইন ও ২৮টি অবিস্ফোরিত বোমা খুঁজে বের করেছে সাহসী মাগাওয়া।
এর আগে আরো ৩০টি প্রাণী এই পদক লাভ করেছে। তবে এই প্রথম কোনো ইঁদুর এই পুরস্কার পেল। পিডিএসএ’র এই পদকের গায়ে খোদাই করে লেখা আছে ‘সাহসিকতা বা দায়িত্ব পালনে অবদানের জন্য’। সাত বছর বয়স্ক মাগাওয়াক ইঁদুরটিকে প্রশিক্ষণ দিয়েছে তানজানিয়াভিত্তিক প্রতিষ্ঠান ‘আপোপো’।

Magawa is an African rat. He was awarded this prestigious gold medal for important work such as finding landmines on Cambodian soil.
The British donor agency PDSA has given the medal to Magawa for his contribution in saving countless lives by finding dangerous landmines on Cambodian soil at the risk of his own life. In this important career, the brave Magawa has discovered 39 landmines and 27 unexploded bombs.
Earlier, 30 more animals won the medal. However, this is the first time any rat has received this award. The medal of the PDSA is engraved with the words ‘Contribution to courage or responsibility. The seven-year-old Magawak rat was trained by the Tanzanian-based organization Apopo.
