IPL 2025 Suspended: BCCI Announces Suspension of IPL 2025 Amid Escalating India-Pakistan Tensions

May 9, 2025 – Kolkata

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially suspended the remainder of the ongoing TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 for one week, citing escalating military tensions between India and Pakistan.

Reasons for Suspension of IPL 2025

The decision follows a series of security concerns, including the abandonment of the Punjab Kings vs. Delhi Capitals match in Dharamshala due to a power outage linked to regional conflict. Additionally, a bomb threat was reported at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, further heightening safety concerns.

BCCI Honorary Secretary Devajit Saikia stated, “The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to suspend the remainder of the ongoing TATA IPL 2025 with immediate effect for one week. Further updates regarding the new schedule and venues of the tournament will be announced in due course after a comprehensive assessment of the situation in consultation with relevant authorities and stakeholders.”

Impact on the Tournament

Prior to the suspension, the IPL 2025 had completed a significant portion of its schedule, with 12 group-stage matches remaining before the finals, originally set for May 25 in Kolkata. The suspension poses logistical challenges, including the closure of 27 airports across India, affecting team travel and match scheduling.

Future Plans (IPL 2025 Suspended)

BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla confirmed that the new schedule for the tournament will be announced after consultations with the government, stakeholders, and broadcasters. The board emphasized its solidarity with the nation’s armed forces and the government during this period of heightened tension.

International Repercussions

The suspension has prompted several international players, including Australians Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc, to leave India amid safety concerns. The Pakistan Super League has also relocated its remaining fixtures to the UAE due to similar security issues.

As the situation develops, the BCCI will continue to monitor the circumstances and provide updates on the resumption of the IPL 2025 season.
