Thomas W. Elmhurst, the first Chief
The first contingent of the Air Force was formed on 1 April 1933, consisting of 6 IF-trained officers and 19 jawans. The first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Air Force was Air Marshal Sir Thomas W. Elmhurst. After independence, Sir Thomas W. Elmhurst was made the first Chief of the Indian Air Force, Air Marshal. He remained in this post from 15 August 1947 to 22 February 1950. The credit for ‘liberating’ the Air Force from the Army goes to Sir Thomas W. Elmhurst.
