GSTN Introduces Biometric Aadhaar: The Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) has announced a significant update to the GST registration process for applicants in Maharashtra and Lakshadweep. A new system incorporating biometric-based Aadhaar authentication and document verification has been rolled out to enhance security and streamline the registration process.
This change results from an amendment to Rule 8 of the CGST Rules, 2017. The amendment allows for applicant identification on the common portal through data analysis and risk parameters, including biometric-based Aadhaar authentication and photograph capture, alongside verification of original documents uploaded with the application.
GSTN has developed the functionality to support this process and launched it in Maharashtra and Lakshadweep on February 8, 2025. This new system also incorporates document verification and an appointment booking process.
How the New Process Works of GSTN Introduces Biometric Aadhaar:
Upon applying for Form GST REG-01, applicants will receive one of two emails:
- OTP-based Aadhaar Authentication Link: If the applicant receives this link, they can proceed with the GST registration process as before, using OTP-based Aadhaar authentication.
- GSK Appointment Booking Link: If the email contains this link, the applicant must book an appointment at a designated GST Suvidha Kendra (GSK) for biometric-based Aadhaar authentication and document verification. The email will include details of the designated GSK and its jurisdiction.
For those receiving the GSK appointment link, the appointment booking feature is now available. After booking, the applicant will receive an appointment confirmation email.
What to Bring to the GSK:
When visiting the designated GSK, applicants must bring the following:
- A copy (hard or soft) of the appointment confirmation email.
- The jurisdiction details are mentioned in the initial intimation email.
- Original Aadhaar and PAN cards.
- Original copies of all documents uploaded with the GST registration application, as specified in the intimation email.
The Verification Process at the GSK:
At the GSK, biometric authentication and document verification will be conducted for all required individuals listed on the GST application Form REG-01. Applicants must schedule their biometric verification appointment within the maximum permissible timeframe for the application, as stated in the intimation email. After successful completion of the biometric-based Aadhaar authentication and document verification, the Application Reference Number (ARN) will be generated.
GSK Operating Hours:
The operating days and hours of the GSKs will adhere to the guidelines provided by the respective state/UT administration.
This new initiative by GSTN is expected to strengthen the GST registration process, improve security, and reduce the risk of fraudulent registrations. By implementing biometric authentication and thorough document verification, the government aims to create a more robust and reliable GST system.
