A Week of Holidays: State government employees in Bengal are in for a treat, as they will be enjoying a week of holidays from November 12 to November 20, on the occasion of Kali Puja, Bhaiphonta, and Chhat Puja.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced the holidays in a press conference on Tuesday, saying that four holidays have already been announced for Kali Puja and Bhaiphonta, and there is also a holiday for Chhat Puja.
The complete list of holidays is as follows:
• November 12: Kali Puja (Sunday)
• November 13: Additional holiday of Kali Puja (Monday)
• November 14: Additional holiday of Kali Puja (Tuesday)
• November 15: Bhaiphonta and Birsa Munda’s Birthday (Wednesday)
• November 16: The day after Bhifonta (Thursday)
• November 19: Chhat Pujo (Sunday)
• November 20: Additional holiday (Monday) for Chhat Puja
Banerjee also said that the government will provide a grant of Rs 60,000 to each Durga Puja organizer, up from last year’s Rs 50,000. Additionally, Puja organizers will also get a 60% rebate on power consumption, up from last year’s 50%.
The Chief Minister’s announcement has been welcomed by state government employees and Puja organizers alike. Employees are looking forward to the holidays to spend time with their families and friends, while Puja organizers are grateful for the additional financial support.
Significance of the festivals
Kali Puja is a Hindu festival that celebrates the goddess Kali. It is one of the most important festivals in Bengal, and is celebrated with great pomp and fervor.
Bhaiphonta is another important Hindu festival that celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. On this day, sisters apply a tilak on their brother’s foreheads and pray for their well-being.
Chhat Puja is a Hindu festival that is dedicated to the sun god Surya. It is a particularly important festival for the Chhath community, but is celebrated by people of all faiths in Bengal.
