S-400: India’s defense capabilities have reached a new level with the induction of the S-400 Triumf, one of the world’s most advanced long-range air defense systems. Designed by Russia’s Almaz-Antey, the S-400 provides India with a significant strategic advantage in countering aerial threats, including enemy aircraft, drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles.

What is the S-400 Triumf?

  1. Detection and Tracking Phase
  • Radar Units: The system begins with its advanced radar systems like the 91N6E Big Bird radar, which can detect and track up to 300 targets simultaneously at long ranges.
  • 3D animation shows radar waves being emitted in a wide arc, scanning the skies for potential threats such as fighter jets or ballistic missiles.

  • The system uses IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) to determine whether the object is hostile.
  • Once identified, the command vehicle selects the appropriate missile and locks onto the target.

  1. Missile Launch
  • The S-400 can launch four different types of missiles (40N6, 48N6, 9M96E2, and 9M96E), depending on the threat’s range and type.
  • The vertical launch system allows missiles to engage targets in any direction.
  • 3D visuals show the missile firing straight up and then tilting mid-air toward the incoming target.
  1. Mid-Course Guidance
  • The missile receives real-time updates from ground-based radar and command systems to stay locked on target.

  • In the final stage, the missile activates its onboard radar seeker to home in on the target with high precision.
  • The missile intercepts and destroys the target with a proximity-fused warhead.
