15,000-Year-Old Viruses Discovered in Tibetan Glacier Ice – Previously Unknown to Humans
China: The virus was also found in two ice samples collected from China’s Tibetan plateau. That virus is about 15 thousand years old.
Scientists in New York have found its whereabouts. These viruses survive because they are frozen in ice. However, it is estimated that such a virus has not been found before.

The study was published in the journal Microbiome. This discovery is expected to help explain how the virus has evolved over the centuries. Scientist has developed a new ultra-clean method for research.
Hi-Ping-Hong, a researcher at the Bird Polar and Climate Research Center at Ohio State University who studies microbiology, said the glaciers were formed slowly with dust and gas.
In addition, many viruses have been deposited here. Not much research has been done on these glaciers in western China. Our goal will be to use this information to understand the environment of the past. These viruses are part of that environment.
Scientists studied ice samples collected in 2015 from Gulia Ice Cap in western China. The samples were collected from an ice source 22,000 feet above sea level.
When scientists studied the ice, they found that 33 viruses had genetic codes. The scientific community has already identified four of these viruses. But, at least 26 novels. Half of the virus is thought to be alive at the time of deposit.
